Thoughtfully

Reserved

Naoshi Yamauchi, MBA

Meet Naoshi. Growing up, he was always the reserved one in the crowd, quietly observing and often jealous of the animated interactions of his more outgoing peers. He occasionally received feedback about his "Resting B**** Face" and felt the not so subtle pressure at work to be more extroverted, energetic, and charismatic to advance his career. But despite his efforts, he couldn't shake off his inherent reserve.

One day, Naoshi stumbled upon a video by Chris Do on The Futr that suggested a radical exercise: listing out all the negative words he associated with himself. As he wrote down words like "shy," "timid," and "insecure," he braced himself for a flood of self-criticism. Yet, to his surprise, a strange sense of relief washed over him.

Inspired by the video's advice, Naoshi began crafting positive spins on these negative traits. Amidst a list of options, he found resonance in the term "thoughtfully reserved." It struck a chord with him, encapsulating his unique approach to life and work.

Embracing the authentic self brought Naoshi an unexpected sense of joy and liberation. He realized that while he might not be the most vocal presence in the room, his analytical mind and thoughtful approach were his greatest assets. Instead of forcing himself to conform to the stereotype of a high-energy, dominant, and extroverted leader, he embraced his strengths as a problem solver, listener, and collaborator.

Reflecting on his career journey, Naoshi no longer dwells on what might have been if he were more outgoing. He's found fulfillment in being authentically himself, guiding clients through thoughtful analysis and strategic solutions. Success isn't about fitting into societal norms but about embracing one's true self and leveraging unique strengths.
